The Four Rooms of Change
Planning for a workshop by CJ at The Green House, Christina Lake, British
Columbia. Spring 2002.
Day 1, Evening
Introduction (c:a 2 hrs). Paricipats create the Four Rooms of Change
Day 2, AM
- Where are you right now?
Imagine that we spread the 4 Rooms on the floor of this room, so that
the different corners are, in turn, Contentment, Denial, Confusion and
Renewal. Go to that corner which corresponds most closely to how you
feel right now!
Task for the different groups: Why did you go to this room? Tell each
other how you feel right now.
- Life »diagnosis«.
The different aspects of my life, where are they? Personal reflections,
to be shared afterwards in dyads. (Each person is free to choose to
tell the other about their life, concretely, or comment the exercise
abstractly, i.e. »I got more clear about this or that«,
or, »I got nothing out of this«.)
- Organizational (or systems) diagnosis.
Translate the rooms from personal to organizational realities.
Example: What are the conditions for Contentment? Contentment, for both
an indivudual and a system or an organization, is created by having
realistic goals and reaching them. So, what else characterizes organizational
Contentment? What are the characteristics of Denial, Confusion and Renewal
- Questions and answers.
Day 1, PM
- The Outsider Scale.
Self-Censors and Outsiders.
A 24 item questionnaire going into many existential issues in depth.
With questions concerning personal integration.
- Questions and answers in whole group.
Day 2, AM
- Where are you?
Yesterdays exercise repetaed, giving CJ an immediate over-view of what
has happened to people as well as, for them, an opportunity to talk
about anything they might be preoccupied with.
- Problem solving.
The PS Matrix. The questions in each frame are explained. The right
discipline. Giving up. Flow as a matter of taking on challenges. Circle
of Contentment (a re-framing exercise).
Personal problem solving. One problem selected. Work individually, sharing
afterwards in dyads, followed by sharing in whole group.
- Theoretical connections:
MBTI (Jung's typology). The Seasons of a Man's Life by Levinson et.al.
Facticity and project according to Sartre. Winnie-the-Pooh and Contentment.
Day 2, PM
- Characterize the Devil, characterize Jesus Christ in key words.
Now, consider them together, in an open dialogue, cooperating.
- The Holy Quaternity.
- Ask the archetypes for advice.
- Archetypes, psychodrama.
- Where are you, questions and answers, theoretical connections.

people who are more censored than they, themselves. Some prefer those
who are more »far out«.

»out«. Plus and minus aspects. Take turns, aquarium arrangement.
